Predator roosts up with chickens...

Hi, probably too much of a "carry out" for Mr Sparrow hawk  Mrs might take a small bantam or young chicks as she is twice his size. I have a pair around most days hunting the garden birds- never bothered the chickens or ducklings/goslings as yet but i am sure they would take one given the chance!
lovely picture of a beautiful bird.
regards, David :)

 Bet your friend was surprised by the extra resident! Agree with David- he is a beautiful little bird, I don't think I've seen a sparrowhawk but we have lots of buzzards and the occasional red kite where I keep the chickens- never had any trouble with them though!

Hi,

A double take moment- lovely bird.

After correct ID of the visitor by Mr Packham- are we to understand he follows our humble forum? :o

Yes, I made a bit of a mistake

The owner of the coop (George) identified the bird correctly as a Kestrel but a friend who sent it on to me said she looked in her book and identified it as a Sparrowhawk. I looked up the Sparrowhawk too and agreed :-)10

It was a message via Twitter that came to me from Chris Packam (someone else sent the link to him) and he said it was a female Kestrel.

Oh well, you win some, you lose some ;)
