Precautions in the cold

Pony Girl as long as the birds are kept dry and have a draft free place to get into they will do fine. We have Naked Neck, Leghorn and Rhode Island Reds all in bantams and they do fine through our winters. We usually don't have extreme cold temps for very long when they do come our way. A couple of years ago we did have temps of -23C for almost a week straight and all I did was cover the houses with heavy blankets and everyone came through just fine.

Hi all.

Still snowing in the Rossendale Valley. Very windy today to so it's blowing all over the place. With regard to Glycerine someone told me that although it stops water freezing it kills small birds. There are always dunnocks etc. hopping in and out of the enclosure so I dare not try it. I'm not sure how the glycerine is supposed to harm them does anyone have any more info. :?

I haven't tried the glycerin added to water but I'm sure Lydia? and Ozric? were talking about it somewhere on the forum. I put my water containers in my garage / house on cold nights and on frosty nights throw some old coats over the top of them to stop them freezing.

Despite meaning to do it on several occasions, I never remembered to buy any glycerine :roll:
I just make sure there's fresh water out every day. It's been so cold that I've had to break the ice after a few hours so they can still get a drink. I've built an extra shelter so the bigguns and the littluns aren't stepping on each others toes.

My Pekins have been ok in the cold. Rambant is still biting the ankles of unfamiliar legs and his missus is still laying but they don't like being wet. There's been sleet and rain here over the last few days and they didn't look happy. They cheered up when I gave them some warm bacon and sweetcorn though!
