I decided I should give my new hen house a good clean out and spray with Poultry Shield. Haven't done this before, just changed the shavings weekly. No sign of mites yet as I've been using Diatom everywhere. Just thought I would do it anyway. Having just read the instructions, I have a query. I thought you just diluted it as instructed and sprayed it and then left it to dry and that was it, but the instructions say to spray it, leave it to soak and they wash it off! Is this right? I didn't think it had to be washed off, but was safe for the hens once it had dried. Please could someone who uses this give me some advice. Thanks

I have never washed mine off... having said that I haven't read the instructions properly either if thats what it says....
I just dilute mine as per ppm and spray, dry then cover with diatom and shavings / straw depending on where I am washing at the time..
I think drying is pretty imperative tho

Used this product once, diluted and neat but found it had no effect at all and the mite lived through it.

It seemed to be useful for washing up so used it up on that.

i have to agree, i cant work out how poultry shield works as it hasn't got any active pesticide listed as its a natural products, im sure someone will put me right, but i have sprayed it directly onto mites directly with no affect. great for washing out feeders etc.

i use Johnson poultry housing spray once a week plus a steam clean once or twice a year, i use Diatom as well but I'm not 100% sure if this works but i have only had one bad breakout of red-mites so far.

Poultry Shield is detergent-based so works by dissolving the waxy layer on red mite so they dehydrate. Diatom works in a similar way but scratches off/pierces the waxy coating rather than dissolving it.

Have found that using a 20% solution of Poultry Shield works better on red mite than a weaker 10% solution & to really keep on top of the red mite I have to use both Poultry Shield & Diatom.

Well I would have settled for dehydration but it had no effect at all !
