I have a pekin cockeral who is coughing and with a discharge from his eye. I have some liquid baytril that the vet gave me a while ago but I do not know how much to give him - any ideas please. I have taken him into the house to keep warm and he is eating. But he is obviously not happy as his comb is dull and his tail is down. He only 2 years old. I cant get to the vets because we are out in the country and totally cut off at the moment with snow and ice.

It sounds like your Pekin might have mycoplasma which our new Pekins had. Tylan is really the antibiotic you need but Baytril is probably better than nothing. With Tylan you had to put in half a teaspoon to 5 litres of water. Its good that he is still eating : hope he will be ok.

Thanks so much for the reply - where can I get Tylan - do you know please. He seems a bit better this morning - so fingers crossed. Regards Shirley :)

Tylan is an antibiotic that is good for treating respiratory problems in chickens. Unfortunately it is a prescription only drug in the UK so we had to go to the vet. You can buy it on the internet but you have to send a prescription. The weather is alot better in Essex today and most of the snow is melting :-)08 Hopefully it is the same for you so you could go to the vet. Hope he hasn't got any worse.
Best wishes Claire

Baytril will certainly help. Some vets prefer it to Tylan and only stock Baytril for Mycoplasma type infection.

You can find some information in our Poultry Medication section: Baytril

It is a Prescription Only Medication so should only be given under the advice of your vet who I'm sure you will consult before giving it.
