Hi would love some advice about my chickens , i have 6 chickens 4 ex batts and 2 chickens about 6m old 3 of my ex batts( approx 21/2 yrs have died one after the other ... symptoms are bleeding from vent and one had what i think looked like bowel come out ... otherwise look healthy comb good etc has anyone any ideas ?.. i'm worried that it is a disease and the others will catch it... thanks emma

It sounds like one had a prolapse which is not infectious. The other bleeding form the vent could be where they have been pecked by the other chickens. Sometimes, you get one that picks up this very bad habit and it can lead to deaths.

Yes, agree with Chuck. Would only add check their diet, just layers pellets, go easy on the treats as unbalanced diet/overweight birds are more likely to suffer from prolapse, not to say that's necessarily the case with yours though! Exbatts though are more prone to laying dysfunctions owing to their commercial usage.
You could add a little poultry spice (contains calcium and other essential minerals) and cod liver oil (one tablespoon) to their feed twice a week. Make sure good quality crushed oyster shell is available. Alternatively you can bake then crush finely egg shells to increase the calcium in their diet. Calcium has another function of supporting pelvic muscles used in the egg-laying.

Thank you chuck and foxy for your advice.I think your right about one pecking..... as one of the newer chickens now has a ? cut near her vent and bleeding slightly ... is there anything you would recommend to put on it, and would u suggest anti peck products ?? ... foxy -thanks for your diet advice we do the powder but will defininately try the cod liver oil ... thanks

I no the likes of rat poison makes rats bleed internally (which o think is an outright disgrace) as it thins the blood that much, if your neighbour has poisoned them just kill your neighbour, I would.

Please Paddy, we really can't advocate murder on this forum! :o I am sure it is a case of a simple prolapse as Chuck suggested and nothing to do with rat poison ;)

oh dear Paddy, I should have been more specific. I meant if they are wanderers or in the countryside free ranging, they may have gone into the neighboring field, garden, veg patch etc and come across some accidentally. not on purpose! or maybe the OP had put some down not knowing the dangers, I can't assume they do or don't know what rat poison does and if it's only palatable to rats and the chickens wouldn't bother it. (yes, there are people out there that have no idea...i used to work as a vet nurse and met some corkers) ;) I'm not pointing any fingers, just asking! lol

Just tellin you what I'd do if I found they had lol, serious , ah well maybe wrong advice in your situation ha
