Continuing my quest to reduce the strain on my back I have been looking at a way of poo picking the enclosures without bending down. There are dog poo pickers available and horse poo pickers available. I've used a horse poo picker (just a dustpan and brush on a stick) and it's hard work as they are quite big. The dog poo picker (a grabber on the principal of a litter picker) I've seen looks unlikely to work very well for chicken poo. Both would be an improvement on the previous method of a dustpan and brush though.

I need a length of at least 80cm. Does anyone use a mechanical arm or other gadget for poo picking which means you don't have to bend down?

What about a Turkey Baster...... Bare with me....
Could you use some sort of suction on the end of a pipe to do the job rather than sweeping? I doubt it would pick up the fizzles, but then neither would a brush I suppose.

I do bend down to sweep the poo. But if you dont want that, you can use a metal scraper, the way commercial farmers do it. But that would be costly.

What about a domestic long handled dust pan and brush? That would be much lighter than the horse poop scoop.

Or how about this - they deliver to EU countries. Not cheap, but then neither are chiropractors!

Well I've been considering making something Margaid and it looks quite similar to that link. Back to the days of Blue Peter of course using bits we've put in the recycling bin for the prototype. Then maybe make something from aluminium sheet. The claw at the front needs to be a spatula arrangement to get the little ones up.
