One of my polands is driving herself crazy scratching around her ears- she has even made herself bleed and it now looks as though she has excema there? She stands on one leg to do it, then falls over, gets confused and looks like she's having a fit, and gets all muddy rolling about. Her eyes are often closed like she is sleeping- It's almost like she can't control herself.

She has times where she looks awful and I contemplate dispatching her and then she recovers and has a walk around the garden, eats and drinks and looks fine until she starts with the scratching again.

I have examined her for mites - I can't see anything at all but I treated her a few days ago with a powder just in case. I also gave her a bath to try to relieve any itching (she loved it but went straight back to the scratching afterwards.

She had the same problem about a month ago- I bought her indoors and expected the worst but after a bath and dusting she made a full recovery. She is kept with my other polands who are all fine.

Anyone got any ideas?

Could have mites in ears which you cant always see, give her a good dosing with liquid parafin around the head and into the ears, if it is scaly mite flakes around head will appear.
Good luck and I hope your girl improves.

Thanks Sue, I forgot to say I also dosed her with Ivermectin so that should have taken care of any mites- It's really odd- almost like it's a habit and she can't help herself! Will see how she is in the morning, but she's not looking the best :(

Ivermectin doesn't always work,it is only licensed for cattle and sheep. If they are possibly inside her ears I would still do what Sue suggested, sounds as if you've got nothing to lose :( .
Hope she gets better very quickly Ros,keeping fingers crossed for you.

I'll get some liquid parrafin tomorrow and give it a try - to be honest I'd try anything! I'm really gutted as she's one of my favourites - spare cockerels never get ill!

Try the Johnson's scaley leg and face spray,Sue told me it is very effective,it is available to buy in a lot of pet shops, for tonight,to give her a bit of comfort, using a syringe or dropper I would put a small amount of olive oil (that you would use for cooking)inside her ears.
It wont kill mites, but should soothe the discomfort for her.

She's a bit better today - after following Sue's advice (Wouldn't fancy trying that on a big bird!) She's having a wander around the garden with her friends but still keeps falling asleep bless her  I put a pic in the photo section so you can see the state of her.

As long as she continues to get better each day, she'll soon be great again. So relieved she is a bit better already, her and Bobble are so very cute.
