Ive noticed all my hens are shaking their heads a bit like they have a twitch, can anybody shed any light on the matter ?? Andy.

Just somethings to ponder! Head/ear mite , upper respiratory tract infection . Was going to put a third but its escaped from my brain remnant - sorry! Ros

Sounds like ear mite to me. Suppose they need Frontline spray (not spot on) if that's the case as there is no way to attack them directly. Three squirts per kg bodyweight, which is half the minimum cat (or was it dog? the smallest anyway) dose -that's the rate we applied it, without any problems. Can't be re-applied for 28 days and our vet suggested an egg withdrawral of 7 days.

Thanks for that...ear mite...poor things, will do frontline spray, do i spray this on to bare skin anywhere on the bird ?? thanks...Andy.

Yes. Lift feathers and spray in different areas. We applied around lower neck and back and got spray from vets (avoid eyes, so put birds head facing the wind). Our local stockists only did 'spot -on' version. It isn't licenced for chickens -the instructions are for dogs and cats. It will kill any other types of lice on them as well but we only use it as a last resort. Regular lice dusting seems effective usually, but we had an outbreak of head lice which proved stubborn.
