We are thinking of building our own coops from plastic but before we do, we were considering the advantages (or not) of doing so.

Are we right in thinking that a plastic coop will prevent red mite as there's fewer hiding places?

Any other tips or views welcomed.

Fantastic forum by the way.

HI Nice and welcome to the Forum.

Plastic will help you to avoid redmite, for the reason you give, and will be less likely to harbour it than wood, but won't prevent it and you will still need to be vigilant and keep it clean. However my hens have lived in plastic coops for several years now with no redmite problems ( fingers crossed.)
There's been a long thread on here recently about making your own plastic coop, see http://poultrykeeperforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=6575 and there are several others about making home made coops in general, which you may find interesting to read.
