Thinking ahead to brighter warmer times I don't know how many people go for breaks in Spring but perhaps this might interest somebody. Landmark trust does self catering lets in historic buildings and uses the funds to save further historic buildings in danger of being lost. The link doesn't show all of the properties but you can search them on the site.

Have to say that they have some amazing properties, have stayed in three of them over perhaps the last 15 years so I'm hardly a regular but they are great places to stay, if often a little on the cold side due to the limitations of putting central heating into some of them. They even have a (very expensive) place which sleeps 8 in Hampton Court Palace!, not that I've stayed there I should add.

There are some lovely properties on the site, and a friend of ours stayed in a lighthouse a few years ago.
We have had a break in Norfolk this year already, and have a week in Wales booked. Then in July I am treating OH to The Tall Ships race that starts in Sunderland as she just loves those old square riggers (or is it the sailors) and has sailed on a few.We are promising ourselves a long trip on one in the next couple of years.

Ooh ooh! I want to stay in the Pineapple! You coming anywhere near me on your trip to Wales BYM?
Can't offer anywhere more exciting than my house to stay in, but there's Flounder's Folly just a few miles away, Stokesay Castle just down the road and the Judges Lodging in Presteigne ... Plus I can scare myself witless and take you over the Long Mynd!

While ordinarily I wouldn't condone anyone visiting Sunderland, I suppose you have a good reason to risk it BYM. The Mackems will certainly be delighted that the pair of you will cause the average IQ in the city to temporarily double. Being serious though, it's a really good event, the tall ships came to Newcastle while I still lived there in 1986 and 1993 and it was quite a spectacle so I'm sure you'll enjoy it. I would imagine you will be very busy and have your plans already but if you have a bit of free time to spare then it is certainly worth heading up to Northumberland. There are any amount of things to see up there, some lovely deserted beaches, at least three top rate castles, Hadrian's wall and some lovely scenery. More locally, Beamish open air museum which isn't far to the west of Sunderland was always a good day out as of course is Durham. Hope you have a nice time whatever you do.

I've stayed in a couple of Landmark Trust properties on Lundy Island, in the Bristol Channel. I'd definitely recommend it. I'm also told that the gents' loo of the island's one and only pub has the best view in the world!

I've got to speak up for Sunderland too. While you're there, do spend a few hours at the National Glass Centre. It's fascinating!

Forgot about the glass centre, never been but have heard similar feedback about it.

We have visited the North and had a lovely day at Beamish, Bamburgh, Hadrians wall and Cragside House. It was foggy most of the time apart from the day we went to Bamburgh. We have also visited the Middlesborough transporter bridge.
You are the 2nd person to mention the glass centre Icemaiden.
We also went to Salthome to see a rare bird, we had to go down Zinc Works Rd, which should have given us a clue to the area, the smell was appalling and at sunset everything had a strange green glow. I swear all the local birds were luminous.
We have been to several Tall Ships regatta's and many come up the Thames on visits, OH usually rushes to the river to see them go up or down. We usually have a visit to West India dock where they berth and OH has perfected the art of getting a guided tour on ones that aren't even open to the public.
Best one was ARC Gloria (Colombia) which was open to the public, and she went through Tower Bridge with all the sailors in the rigging with jumpers in the flags national colours, singing their national anthem with the ships dog on the bowsprit, and the huge battle flag flying. As it got dark she went back through all lit up

Wow, Think I saw something about this in a magazine, certainly a holiday with a difference and where you definitely want it a bit warm. Where did your mate stay ?

They're originally from Derbyshire / staffs so I'd guess at the one in Leicestershire. They do a lot of walking in the Peak District. They said the one they stayed in had access to the hotel next door, so you could use their facilities of you so wished. Think you pay extra if you don't take your own bedding etc.

Thats a good idea having facilities available next door.
We had a lovely walking holiday in the Peak District last year. We had never thought of going to the Peak District before and we had a lovely time. Certainly some stunning scenery on the walks.

Saw them at football today, it was the one in Warwickshire they stayed at. App. They've doubled the places, you can stay at, this year.

That looks nice the Warwickshire one. There is even one St Mary the Virgin Stansted Mount Fitchet in Essex that isn't too far from us . It is certainly something we would consider for a holiday with a difference as there are certainly well sited around the country
