I've noticed that crossing poultry seems to be fine. Is there any kind of restriction?

Only that pure bred birds fetch more money Pavlor. It's nice to breed pure if you can, though it is a bit limiting if like me you like to have all sorts running round the garden. But I am trying to refine my mixed flock to a breed and have just sold five non standard hens off today!
