Pets, pets, pets (of the non feathered kind)

I thought I'd tell you a little tale about my rabbits, last year in april,my two adult rabbits,Sooty and Sox became the proud parents of 7 rabbit kittens. The day Sox gave birth, her and Sooty mated again before I'd seperated them.
Sooty duly went to the vets and was castrated,so he could live with his new family again.
I sold 4 of the baby rabbit kittens, when they were 8 weeks old to a local pet shop.
Keeping his three daughters,Titch,Sable and Smudge, who are definitely female. So I've now got five rabbits, four entire females and 1 castrated male.
We then waited for D-Day.
Sox was definitely pregnant, and happily eating, after 8 weeks,I tried putting her in a hutch on her own incase she didn't want to give birth with the other buns present. She spent a fornight in solitary, which is horrid for a community rabbit. No babies,so I put her back with her husband and daughters.Weeks went by,no sign of any babies,so I decided she must have aborted them and they'd been eaten.
Distastefull as it may seem to us,all rodents will eat dead family members, including babies. This is because,if they didn't in the wild it would attract predators which could destroy the whole community.

Well,on saturday morning,I was putting fresh hay and straw in the rabbits hutch, and, there in the nesting area is a rabbit nest complete with rabbit kittens.Think Sox is going for the longest rabbit gestation ever.
This is a pic of the proud parents.

I know some animals can put their babies on 'simmer' if they don't want to give birth or don't feel safe - or of course they can absorb them. Thank goodness yours was just 'simmering' . Bless her. They are lovely bunnies Lydia :D

Yes,rabbits can put the birth on hold(simmer),not usually as long as she did though :? ,sure she was going for a world record  .

Are you shore sooty is just yawing, he hasnt eaten a baby bunny has he !!!!!!!!!!!!! Keep the pictures coming, carnt wait to see the babys.

LOL,no,he is yawning.I think it was boredom at being photographed again.I'm resisting holding these babies for the moment. Her last litter was born when it was warm,so I handled them from day one.
If I handle these though,it will mean taking them out of their nest and I don't want them to get cold.At the week-end they should have more fuzzy fur,so they can come out briefly and be photographed :D .

Im trying to post some more pictures but it comes up to say my file is to big, what does that mean, and how do i make it small :?

Needs downsizing,on my pc,if I right click on a pic,I get a box come up that allows me to edit the pic.
I left click on the option 'open with' and then chose the thingy that will edit the pic.
the other option is to email them to yourself, this will automatically downsize them for you.

We finally lost Bay (see page one of this post) in October 2010. He said he was ready to go. We had taken him to the vets a couple of months previously, but he put on such a show we brought him home again.

We lasted nearly three weeks without a dog.

They are brothers. Bobbie in red, and Billie in brown. Six months old tomorrow. They are full on fun as only spaniels can be.

Thanks Tim, it was sad, but he had a good innings, and was ready to go, so it wasn't too traumatic.

Billy & Bobby have already decided they want to be van dogs and cause problems if I go out without them.

Luckily they are small enough for a cage on the front passenger seat. Spaniels always want to drive!

Well hello there Billy and Bobby!!! :-)08

They are gorgeous!!! I adore spaniels, but they are such a handful... :-)07 :D

Found Bobbie standing in the middle of kitchen table earlier, I think he was more surprised to be there than I was to see him there.
