Our old Cavalier was on Metacam for years. To start with from the vet at great expense (think we must have been supporting half his family on what we used to hand over each month!!! ) then started buying it on the internet. You have to have the prescription from the vet & send it off, they send pills back by return, much, much cheaper. (Still more than ibruopfen though). we didn't mind, would have done anthing for her, kept her going about 3 years.
Still miss her now........
Got a mad Bichon now, a friend decided she'd made a terrible mistake 24 hrs after getting her & the breeder wouldn't take her back (not even the NEXT day) Some breeders are so unscrupulous - not interested in the animal. Anyway she came that night & never went home ! She's crackers!!!!
My mum kept her spaniel by giving her metacam, not for as long as your cav Lucylou, but a few extra years.
With my old dog Tubbs, when he was a pup he got run over(whilst in my dad's care) and after breaking both his left legs in three places each, fracturing his pelvis, and others scrapes etc made a full recovery until 10yrs old. Then he had another accident, seriously damaging his front left leg.Vet tried to treat it,first of with rimadyl, metacam, then cortisone injections in his joints.By this time, his back end had given up.The dog was completely helpless and couldn't get up.I'd actually decided to have him pts,as there weren't any options left.
A friend suggested cod liver oil,I gave it a try and it worked, really well. The vet was pleased,I remember asking him if the injuries would shorten Tubbs life, and,he replied that unfortunately it would.
Some years later,he was put on aspirin, human aspirin as rimadyl didn't work on him.rimadyl is the dog version of aspirin.
Tubbs lived until he was well over 17yrs,I still miss him now

As for your Bichon's breeder, she shouldn't breed.I keep in touch with everyone who has had a pup from me, they all know I will have any dog back that I have bred.
With dogs,as a breeder, you must be ready to take back any dog you have bred at any age.If circumstances have changed so you can't,you should help to re-home your progeny, seeing as you bred it in the first place.I do hope that Bichon breeder is no longer breeding.
