I started feeding my birds Mash when I first got them as that was the feed they were on before I got them. I got fed up with the waste and changed over to pellets. Saved a fortune and I reckoned I was buying about half the amount of feed. When I built the new run with a covered roof I got a hopper type feeder and I just have to fill it up once a week. No spillage of feed below the feeder and that points to minimal loss of feed.

However--I was passed on a sack of layers mash and I filled the hopper up yesterday with it. Today it is empty. Still plenty of mash underneath it but the hopper is empty. Think I'll keep the mash for the weekly hot mash feed I give them.

We prefer to feed pellets for the same reason..much less wastage! :D

I have heard that feeding mash rather than pellets can be useful to prevent boredom, they have to scratch around in the mash, and as it takes longer to eat than pellets will keep them occupied for longer.

I did have to put a batch of hybrids (bought in) back on mash after weaning them on to pellets as they just didn't do well and started feather pecking. someone down at the feed merchants suggested I tried mash so I put them back and they just went forward, more eggs, less or no feather pecking. As Foxy says meal does seem to occupy them for much longer so they don't get bored.
I too prefer pellets for several reasons but especially to cut down on waste.

Agree with Foxy and Chuck entirely. Mash is great trick to stop feather pecking caused by bordom and can be thrown out dry instead of corn scattered. We also use it mixed as intended, warm and wet, for birds that have lost their appetite.
