PEKING WITH NO NAIL TOE

AFTER SEEING MY PEKIN WITH A LUMP OF MUD ON HIS FOOT I DECIDED TO TRY TO HELP LIKE U DO CAUGHT HIM OK PLACED HIM ON A SOFT TOWEL TO HAVE A CLOSER LOOK BUT PETER DECIDED HE COULD DO IT ALONE AND JUST TOOK HIS FOOT OUT EXCEPT OFF CAME HIS TOE NAIL AND IS BLEEDING SO I PUT HIM IN A BOX WITH STRAW SO HE CARNT GET PICKED ON WHAT CAN I DO NOW :cry: :cry:
 
Hi,

Try to stem the blood with either "Vets Wound Powder", ( worth getting for such matters)
or FLOUR if nothing else to hand.

It is rather worrying just how much blood comes out. When its subsided, personally I would put some vet wrap on his foot, to keep it clean.....

I am sure an experience member will come along and give you long term advice- but it would seem you need to stop the bleeding now.

Don't worry, its more frightening than anything else, mine lose toe nails and foot blood feathers in summer like theres no tomorrow- hence I have wound powder in stock.

JUST WANTED TO HELP HIM HAD TROUBLE TREADING WITH IT ON SERVES ME RITE BUT DONT WANT HIM TO SUFFER HES LOVLEY
 
Just had a quick search on here, and Gentian Violet Spray might be a good idea. Spray on his foot to stop the others from pecking at him.

Maybe the lump of mud was actually preventing his loose nail from coming completely off.....
 
i wondered if the nail had died and thats why it came off but
the blood was at the end hes quiet enough at moment keep checking on him
wont put him in with ladies till im happy theres no more blood

he will sit on top of where water is then he gets all bits stuck to his feet silly man
 
Hi there! I have just joined up and saw your post. If it is any help, our Andalusian bantam hen lost a toe nail last year. We bathed the toe until it was clean, dabbed iodine on it (I would think any antiseptic would do), and wrapped it it cotton wool secured with micropore surgical tape. Then we made her a little 'wellington boot' out of the finger of an old rubber glove and taped this over her injured toe, securing it to her leg. This protected the toe nail from getting pecked and also dirt & bacteria. Chickens aren't fussy where they tread! We changed this dressing daily in the beginning and alternate days after that, keeping it on for around 10 days until the toe wound completely healed. She did walk slightly funny in her wellie, kind of goose stepping a bit with that leg, but it didn't slow her down at all! If you have an Andalusian Bantam, you will know how incredibly fast they are!! She then grew another perfect nail and you can't tell there was ever anything wrong now.
