Asked the person that gave us the brood what the mother is and I am none the wiser now. Apparently she is

Japanese Bantam X Belgian Blue Ba'Buccle

Still none the wiser but some of you may know the parentage or correct what I have probably misheard.

Just in case any of you have better ideas or knowledge Here is the pic of her again

She does have some feathering on the legs- but not much and two of the chicks are showing leg feathers aswell.

Reading my new copy of Keeping Chickens by jeremy Hobson and Celia Lewis I found the Barbu d'Uccle listed. It's one of the "Belgium bantams", a true bantam, and the listing says "All are bearded and muffed... the Barbu d'Uccle has a single comb and heavily feathered feet and legs" and blue is listed as one of the colours. The book also has a section on Japanese bantams which it says is a true bantam breed. Both sexes have very short legs. The book says breeding is difficult because of fertitlity issues and they can suffer from a genetic defect that arrests development of the chick in the egg. I'd love to see what the chicks look like when they're bigger. Hope this helps a bit Stapfam.

Thanks for the info on the Japanese and the Barbu d'uccle. The breeder does keep Bantams and these were a brood that she had no room for at home and had them "Free Range" at a nursery. They were about one week old when we got them but there was the worry of predators getting them and she passed them onto us. This is the mother but no idea of the father of the chicks but from my experience of keeping Show Finches- Anything could come out in the breeding. I will post pics as they progress. Just hope there will not be too many cockerels as I live in a residential area and they will have to go.
