If I have two Blue Partridge Brahma pullets, and one buff Orp pullet,.. when do they start laying?.. and can chickens see in the dark, as some say the nest boxes should be in the dark?

Thank you in anticipation..... Tally

Love the cartoon there.... :D

Its often best to have the nest boxes where its a bit darker, or if not staple a bit of blanket or old towelling half over the nest box opening. The hens prefer a bit of seculsion when laying, and it helps prevent any egg pecking/eating.

Hens are usually very placid when its dark, so I would suspect they are not good at seeing in the dark, but as young hens will often lay whilst on the perches at night they obviously don't need to see what they are doing to lay :-)11

Darkbrowneggs,.. thank you for that advice, it's very interesting this keeping chickens,.. I have just seen a pic of a Brahma and the owner says he is a cockrel,.. but he has no wattles or comb.. I am confused?? :geek:

The Buff Orpington pullet should start some time after 26 weeks, our were around 30 weeks Tally. Depends on the strain you have as to how many she lays or how big they are. Some only lay 50 a year, ours could do 200 (as they did first laying year) if they didn't keep going broody! Ours get worse as they get older.

Brahma girls and boys feather up very differently when they are chicks. I suspect that the breeder/owner has used this method to sex them.

The young boys feather up slowly over the shoulders and their sisters feather up overall far quicker than their brothers. :) Usually able to tell which is which from about 2 weeks through to 6 weeks or a little longer.
