Had a query from a girl at work (seeing as I'm the office chicken nutter). :)
Her mum has some chickens that may need antibiotics. I've recommended the vet as always, but as she's on her own, wondered how she'd be able to administer antibiotics if prescribed.
My thoughts would be to isolate the chook and drop the dose onto something like a small wad of bread to avoid having someone else there to hold the victim down. Any ideas if this would affect the drug, or if anyone has any other options I could suggest?

I know Tylan can be added to the drinking water, although we have never used it BB. Yes, it will be a problem on her own to administer orally. We use a 1mL syringe for Baytril, wrap the chicken in a towel to stop the wings flapping, kneel down and put the chicken between your legs and 'sit' on it, then hold the head with your left hand, 3 fingers behind and thumb and forefinger prises open the beak (careful not to damage lower), leave forefinger in beak to hold it open, put syringe well down throat with head tilted back and administer. And all this time the chicken is struggling, so if at all possible it should be a two person job. I don't think the bread will hold the dose, but it won't affect the effectivity.

fab, will pass on the info.
Interestingly, i tried the bread method last night with olive oil to test it out - bread held the oil & Nancy gobbled it up without dropping it. Nice to know its an option if it doesnt affect the drug :)
