One of my hens just started to lay 25 weeks old but all others are of the same age and not laying at all, can anyone tell me why the others don't lay any eggs? :-)11

I check on them three to four times a day but can only ever find one in the coop but not in any of their nest boxes? :?

Any replies appreciated :)

This time of year is a bit hit and miss whether young pullets decide to lay..or hold off until next spring. Pure breeds are more likely to give it a miss this late, and hybrids at that age probably will be about ready now.

The colour of their combs usually are the first clue, faces and combs redden, and the pullet will become interested in the nest box, they tend to have a rounder look with the pelvic bones widening to allow the egg to pass through.

There is no hard and fast rule..some just take longer, but always worth the wait! :-)17

I can't really answer your question, sorry, but we have almost 24weeks old hens and no sign of eggs at all... Quite frustrating...

Is there something in the air this year?

My girls are about the same age and they don't seem to be anywhere near a laying routine yet. Isn't it disappointing when your children lift up the nesting box and discover.....nothing! It is natures lesson in being patient, maybe!!!! We are just enjoying our girls in the garden for now. They will lay when they are ready, I'm sure!

Our last to lay Wyandotte (Mavis) was 8 and a half months old. When they start clucking the 'I'm going to lay message' you may have to put them in the nest box so they realise its the best place to be to lay. Some of ours have taken weeks to get them in there, but it's important eggs are not laid and left in full view as one might break and get eaten -then your problems start!
