Official recognition for eggs at last!

I've been having at least two and sometimes four poached eggs for breakfast for at least the last 8 years Marigold, but it was only two years ago when that level of consumption was declared 'safe'. Perhaps the scientists will change their minds again?

When we exported our chickens they were blood tested for 4 types of salmonella- the vet said none of which were harmful to humans, only other chickens!

Eggs are wonderful, especially when you grow your own, I love 'em all ways, slightly squishy in sandwiches, poached on toast, hard boiled with Mayo, etc., etc.

Nothing nicer than collecting from your own hens!

Ooh, don't Valerie! I really miss doing that.

I have a kitchen "gadget" made by Addis, called an Eggzactly which I was given by my local hardware store as Addis launched it a couple of days before the Currie speech. It's very simple - a flat piece of plastic with a weird shaped slot. You put your (room temperature) egg in the slot pointed end down, and read off the cooking time at the point where the egg jams. it has produced perfectly cooked soft boiled eggs every time. Luscious runny yolks and perfectly set whites. Mmmm , I can feel boiled egg and soldiers creeping up for tea!

I tried this one from Lakeland http://www.lakeland.co.uk/3158/Egg-Perfect-Colour-Changing-Boiled-Egg-Timer- which is a plastic egg that you put in the pan and it changes colour as the eggs cook to different amounts. It did work but I had to return it because it made a nasty smell in the kitchen from the heated plastic and I wondered if it was releasing toxins into the water which might penetrate the porous eggs. I wrote a scathing review which Lakeland refused to post on their website. So i would be very interested if anyone else has this problem with this device - maybe I just got one from a bad batch?

Nothing better than an egg, especially for making a quick meal. Oh the joy as a child of being given the cake mix bowl to scrape out.
Like the sound of your addis gadget Margaid.
Not tried the Lakeland egg timer so can't pass comment on that

I am renowned for putting eggs in to boil and getting sidetracked :-D Left 'em on overnight once - oops! burnt eggs and burnt pan: but I have never done that again

I tried one of those plastic, boil with the eggs, thingys too. Does have a bit of an acrylic smell but the main problem found was that the colour change around the perfectly boiled egg time was so indistinct that it was much better just watching the clock (that morning maths problem of: its nearly half past if I stand by the sink so they will be ready when its about 15 seconds to nearly 25 to.)
There's nothing better than a rich, just nicely runny egg from your own hens. Roll on spring!

Oh, poor rick, no eggs from your babies!
My very early this years babies are now starting to lay, they have amazed me, as most of the Croads I have hatched in the past, take a long time into lay, I have had some lovely true plummy coloured eggs as well from these girls.

Not a blue gooseberry as yet Val :) They are getting more confident though with the others and that means a lot more chest bumping and hackleing between them but with this lot it all happens in a flash after running and flying around in crazy circles. Mo is the first ever hen to fly up onto the run roof so far - landed there by accident and then visibly thought ' whoa, this is weird' and quickly flew down again.
Plum coloured eggs? Purpley brown?

Hi rick,
yes, dusty purpley light brown, its a Croad thing! No brown eggs in his Country until Croads in the 1840s apprently, and some of them lay brown eggs with a definite purple bloom on the shells, the bloom is in fact, a dullness.
My girls come from eggs of one of the best breeders and showers, and having fallen in love with the breed and decided to try to get some, I found she lived about 15 miles from me. One Croad = the room of two others. They are gentle and are extremely ladylike and nag the others out of their way, or give them a gentle shove.
Why don't we have a "tales from the chicken run" thing?.
