I am so upset. I was gardening today and Jerry my drake was enjoying the worms that I had dug up.
Digging out a large piece of turf I tossed it to one side not realising Jerry was there. It hit his leg and he started limping.
Having experienced being without a knowledgeable vet on ducks; I looked up my nearest expert; and talked to them about it. Thought it would be best to leave him to rest on it and see how it was in the morning.
Have just gone to put them to bed and had to pick Jerry up. Feeling his leg now it is swollen and hot compared to the other.
When he first hurt it I tried to feel it for breaks but it didn't seem to be broken.
Has anyone experienced a similar injury and if so please tell me the outcome will be good when I take him to the vets tomorrow.

Well we've had chickens with leg injuries Duggat. Swollen joint feeling hot. We just wrapped it in a cold cloth for a few minutes every hour or so to get the swelling down and next day they were fine.

If you had a pond that would cool it down. Guess best to get the vet's opinion though.

Best to get a vets opinion, they would probably advise an anti inflammatory and rest if there is no break. I have used metacam in the past with a similar incident and twice daily cool baths for one of my runner ducks who had a hip injury. A cold cloth sounds like a very good idea from Chris, keeping the joint cool will reduce swelling and therefore help healing much in the same way as humans.

How is Jerry this morning Duggat?

Hi,
One of my runners developed a swollen foot-presumably from an injury last year and he was hobbling and tipped to one side. Took him to the vet that day who gave a steroid and antibiotic injection and advised twice daily soaking in a saline bath. I put this in a washing up bowl on a table outside and was very easy to do. The vet checked him a week later and he had recovered and has had no problems since despite his following me round(to try and peck me!) and getting stood on and fallen over on a regular basis.
Fingers crossed yours will be fine too

Just come back from the vets. Jerrys long bones do not appear to be broken but he is staying for an Xray just in case.
If the leg is broken he will need to stay away from water. That will be an absolute nightmare as he has to be with his wife Karen and although Jerry would be okay in the house, Karen would not. Thinking of getting a hutch so I can keep them both in the pen but Jerry warm and dry locked in the hutch. Their duck house is too high for him to be in it and see Karen.
Wish him luck that it isn't a break and just a sprain.

Great news!!!!!!!!! Vet called and said no broken bones. Possible pulled ligament and a slight graze. Leg bandaged, antibiotics and pain killers given.
Total rest and no water play for a week depending how he goes.
Rabbit hutch purchased on ebay so he can rest but be near his beloved Karen.
And breathe............till the next catastrophe!
Who said keeping ducks was easy?????? :D
