The dog started barking at midday, which is usually because the postie has a package that needs signing for. So I went outside to see and was confronted by the sight of a TANK parked in the driveway. A soldier wandered over to me and explained they were on manoeuvres and could they park it in the garden. No problem (because it was one of those high speed lightweight ones with tyres). So we had a tank parked on the lawn for a couple of hours! Daren't take photos as they can be very sensitive about that.

Is this part of the current anti-terrorist alerts in France at the moment, Chris, or just happened to be local manoeuvres in your area? What's the mood like in Gascony at present?

Nothing to do with the terrorists Marigold. We saw a really big tank in a field not far from here last year so this area must be used regularly for ground manoeuvres. There is a huge air base not far from here and we used to get a lot of big helicopters flying down the valleys. But there isn't much happening now so they must be deployed elsewhere?

Gascony seems the same as usual, but we are a very long way from Paris. You are closer than us I think?

We've accepted an offer on our house and the sale appears to be progressing, subject to a mortgage. Hopefully when we buy here our internet connection will be better as I've lost a lot of posts recently and now have to keep them as short as possible.

Great about the house offer, Chris, it's been a while.
My hairdresser flew back from Grenada last Saturday and expected Gatwick to be on high alert, but she said there were just a few police standing around chatting to each other.

Well the dog barked again and I went outside expecting to see another tank. No, this time it was actually the postwoman!

I'll be flying out in two weeks for a few days so will find out if they let me back into France on my return. Hopefully it will be my last flight, the final trip planned will be in my van to empty the last stuff from the house and hand over the keys. Three and a half years we've been trying to sell. The fault of the three estate agents who all dramatically over-valued it. Fortunately the experience has been invaluable, because houses here are rubbish and end up costing the foreign buyers a fortune to restore and in many cases they run out of money, fall out and split up. The current exchange rate means we have lost nothing fortunately and can now spot a money pit immediately. Problems typically are damp, flooding, very poor condition, asbestos roofing and chronic over-pricing. Work over here takes a long time to get done and is over double the price it would be in England, simply because the system sees artisans taxed on gross income not profit and they have to pay registration charges annually. Typically restoring a house would take over 5 years, even if you were French. If you can't do the work yourself you are likely to lose a lot of money when re-selling. The buyer pays 7% for the estate agent fees and 8% to the notaire for the conveyancing, consequently people rarely move and it is difficult to find buyers if they do. Many houses we have seen have been on the market for over 5 years and no realistic chance of ever selling unless, as sometimes happens, a foreign buyer gets taken in by the agents sales pitch. So far we have dismissed hundreds from their spec, viewed 40, definitely dismissed 39 and so have only one possible subject to price. This is after over two years viewing in this area.

Great story Chris!. Think yourself lucky your not living in NordRhein in Germany, I had a friend used to serve in the 1st Armoured Division and they seemingly regularly used to knock down peoples walls, run over their cars etc, I think that even earlier this year one of our armoured cars demolished some poor german pensioners house and we hardly have any troop over there now.

When your house sale goes through why not treat yourself to one of these

Next time the French army arrives they will get even more of a shock than you did.

To compete with the one yesterday it would need a much bigger gun in the turret Dinosaw, but I agree it would give them a surprise. Unfortunately I would then expect £40K to be blown to pieces, together with the house!

Has the house sale gone through OK Chris? Must be a huge relief if it has.
