You will find some variation within a breed. We had a big buff orpington called '7 point' who had such a high pitched crow it was almost silent and he never changed. Wyandottes are incredibly loud. Boris, the Brown English Leghorn Bantam is in the greenhouse at the moment and can be heard clearly 100yards away. Young groups of cockerels will have some apparently silent ones which will start crowing when isolated -like Claude in the photo. He was silent in his group and started two weeks later when we had him. He is not loud by Wyandotte standards.
So Mark, if you want a silent cockerel you won't find one as Davidd says. You might find a quieter one, but be careful if he is not on his own when you go to see him as he may develop when you get him home.
