Does anyone here have further info on quarantine areas? I live in So Cal and this entire state is basically on quarantine & nobody will ship birds here since March. I heard of new cases popping up in AZ and while I would never want to do anything to make this problem worse, I MISS having more than a handful of chickens. I usually have 20-30+ chickens but this year, I was only able to procure 13 before online breeders stopped shipping here. I'm super bummed! Just looking to find out if anyone else is in a quarantined zone (when no cases have been found of the disease) and how you're dealing with it. I'm down to my last 3 ducks, 1 goose and 13 chickens & I'm goin nuts wanting my full farm back!

In France Newcastle virus is immunised by once yearly vaccination because of the consequences. In the UK it results in mass destruction of flocks as there is no immunisation programme. Basically Gardenfarmjunkie76 you will not be able to buy in for ages. Why not breed your own flock and make sure you don't bring in any viruses by way of visitors or feed merchants.

Yeah here they are saying there's no cure of vaccine for it (although they say say that about cancer too & I have serious doubts), but we only have hens, no roos, so breeding isnt an option, especially now with this virus. If I get caught moving birds it's a minimum $2500 fine. We are breeding our own turkeys but I didnt know this was going to happen the way it did or I would have invested in a few roos too. So frustrated!

Hi gardenfarmjunkie, and welcome to the Forum. I'm very sorry to hear about your outbreak. Most of our members are from the UK and so have not faced the NV quarantine problem as it hasn't arisen here yet. We have had shutdowns due to bird flu in recent years, though. It must be very frustrating, as you say, not knowing how long it will last and being unable to breed your own. Keep us updated.

Hi there! I wasnt aware most people are outside the U.S. I'm intrigued they have a vaccine for NV but the U.S doesnt. It's super frustrating. No online hatcheries will ship to California at all, and I found that pur area isnt even in the quarantine area. Hoping this isn't forever. I have a yearly ritual of adding to our farm (and driving my hubby crazy when he sends me for errands at Tractor Supply & coming home with babies!!) LOL!! This is the 1st year I've not been able to add babies to my farm.

Sorry to hear about your outbreak also. You must miss having chooks around.
Welcome to the forum also. Nice to have input from across the pond. please let us know how things progress
I didn't know they immunised in France Chris, you learn something new everyday.

Are you able to buy eggs for hatching? Not a short term solution I know but if you don't know when quarantine will end ...

They only immunise for NV as a showing regulation Bigyetiman- you need to produce your valid certificate for each bird to enter the event. The immunisation is a 'dead' virus, so only effective for a year. As far as I am aware the UK practice of using live viruses on chicks isn't followed, presumably because rearing here is on a very small scale in far better conditions.

Unfortunately we arent allowed to bring in or transport any poultry or eggs. I was able to get 13 chicks before it hit our area & I'm grateful for them. I'm just so used to being able to bring home chicks with no hassle or problems.
