Hi,

I am the one who asked the question about the incubator, see below! I put 6 maran eggs in,2 hatched and very healthy on day 21 :D ,its now day 23 and no sign of life whatsoever from the other four :-)06 . One feels far too light so I dont think that developed at all, the others are heavier but dead as a dodo. Should I hang on for a couple more days or have they had it? I think it may have been that the incubator was too cool. I am not very experienced, so didnt do too bad to get two healthy little chicks I suppose.

Thanks for advice

Pam

You can hang on another couple of days but it's unlikely anything else will hatch.

OK, still dead as dodo's :-)06 .

Can I have some advice here please? Assuming the other eggs dont hatch. I want to raise a couple more chicks to keep and could find homes for the rest.

Now at the moment the ones I have got are four days old Marans. Can I start a second batch of six in the incubator/ I assume by twenty one days (at least)the two I have will be outside, if I put two new chicks in they will be alright if I introduce them carefully? I would like to mix breeds, any suggestions as to what breeds might be suitable and what not/ I know not to put bantams in with full sized birds.

I would quite like some Aracunas or Legbars, or some Harriet Higgeldy ( I think they are called, if I can find the hatching eggs anywhere) I have been keeping chickens for a number of years but only from POL. I already have Speckeldy- laying not very speckled eggs :-)12 , White Ranger, a Skyline and Bovan Nera - whose eggs are more speckled than the Speckeldy :-)10 . Incidently the Skyline is taking AGES to come into lay they others that are the same age have been laying for nearly a month :-)11 .

Thanks
Pam

At 21 days your chicks will be to young to put outside they will still be needing heat and crumb. change from crumb at about 6 weeks by mixing growers in untill about 8 weeks old then the chicks stay on growers untill 16 weeks old. the chicks can go outside at about 6 weeks old when fully feathered but will need to be separate from your other hens untill approx 18 to 20 weeks old by then you will know if they are hens or cocks.
You could always buy some chicks of about the same age to mix with the 2 you have if you hatch more you will need to keep them separate from your older chicks

Yes, if you can find some newly hatched chicks, they can go in with yours and this seems to be your best option.
