Hi Folks,

First post :)

Perhaps a silly question but can you post chickens/chicks?

I am after some rare breeds from UK Mainland, I am in Northern Ireland. Have tried getting eggs sent over but not successfull in hatching any of them. I know other animals can be delivered or poster so is it possible?

Thanks

Hi Douzeper,

There are specialist animal couriers that are licensed to carry birds around the UK. They may go to N. Ireland by request. I guess that would be a very expensive exercise though.

I don't know whether there are any restrictions taking animals into N. Ireland from UK Mainland.

I sold some Orpingtons a few years ago and the lady was taking them to Ireland in the back of a horse lorry... perhaps unofficially though!

When I used to buy in hatching eggs, before the ebay days, I wasn't that successful so I would get 18 or so sent and then could get a reasonable number of chicks hatch. You can buy alot of eggs for the cost of importing / sending birds by courier...

Thanks and yeah that's a good point on cost, although I had 18 eggs bought of ebay and not one hatched :-( I'll maybe try again with the fertilised egg route.

Someone told me they don't like the altitude of the plane, so perhaps I'll try to get them posted via land.

Unless someone on here would stick a stamp on a chicken and see what happens :)

I have had people come over and buy hatching eggs / live birds and take them back with them on the boat - they dont get sea sick :D

The problem is usually the temperature at altitude - it gets quite cold in the hold. The hold is pressurised though.

You can by warm pads / heat packs from ebay that keep them warm - they do this in the states when shipping eggs - Pop the normal poly box into another box that has packing in it. They use a 70 degree F pad that lasts 48 hours or so and pop this into the outer box to keep the eggs at a reasonable temperature.

That said, I would try some more first because it's a very short flight that won't go to altitude for long and Poly boxes are well insulated.

Good Luck

looking at a issue of a practical poultry mag i see there are a number of breeders in ireland depending where you are it might well be worth getting in touch with some to see if they can help

It also might be worth putting a wanted post on here to see if someone keeps the breeds you're after - perhaps soemone could send you a batch of what you need- I think sometimes eggs get ruined in the post but I've sold a few to NI and Scotland and not had bad reports :D

Oh and welcome back Victorias Poultry- not seen you on here in a while :D

One of the local farmers paper is excellent for poultry. I think it is the 'Farmers Journal' or 'Farmers weekly'. My Dad gets several farming papers and Im not sure which one is the good one. I will try to find out tomorrow.

There is also a very good poultry sale in Gosford Forest park near Markethill - you could check out the date of the next one.

hope this helps

WOW thanks for all the replies!

What I wanted was Millefleur Sablepoots, I have asked everyone I know in the Chicken Community but no one I have spoke to has even heard of them, perhaps I am asking the wrong people :?

I'll maybe try to get some posted again and see what happens, thanks again
