Hi all

Just popped in to say hi. Am the proud owner of 8 Corternix Quails at the moment (4 weeks old). Four normal brown coloured, one fawn, one grey and two dark brown. Def 3 Males as they have started calling, so will have to split them out soon.

I normally breed Pekin bantams (a mixed bag of White, Partridge, Splash and MilleFleur) just for the colour and garden pest control.
However, this year I was given a carrier bag full of quails eggs which the 'boss' had been given by a friend. They had been kept in the fridge for a week and he couldn't use them all so passed on to me to use up. Having cracked one and saw fertile, I decided to chance a handful in the incubator, figuring I had nothing to lose. Anyway, out of the twenty or so eggs I put in I have 8 hatch out. Resiliant little things arn't they. All healthy and full of life, and I didn't realise how quickly they 'grow up'.

I have to say, I am head over heels with them. Having always had a soft spot for the Pekins, I am now discovering what little characters the Quails are. I think I am a convert.

Thanks for listening. Looking forward to some interesting topics.

Hi Carole, great to have you on the forum. What an amazing story about your hatch, when so many if us get really stressed about getting everything 'right'. Just goes to show how tough the tiny little chicks must be, as you say. Have you any pics of them?

Brilliant, that's a girl then! Any idea how many boys you've got?
Have you found the threads about posting pics in the Pictures of Chickens sub forum of the General Chickens section, herehttp://poultrykeeperforum.com/viewforum.php?f=27&sid=70e080262e16e6140bc85d927556c745
I haven't found out how to do it straight off my phone, but that doesn't mean it can't be done, im a luddite too. I synch my phone pics to the computer and take it from there when posting pics.

Hi welcome Carole, i am like you i have chickens and ducks and now i have quails.
i can't get over how hardy they are, and like you i am smitten, i got my eggs off ebay and they came from Bulgaria (i like the photo he had of them), 10 days in the post and half way through the incubation period we had a power cut from the storms, but i still managed to hatch 3.
my favourite little quail, just found out it's a boy.

~Wow doesnt time fly.

Maureen - I finally ended up with 5 hens and 3 cocks.
I put 2 hens and 1 cock together in two cages and they seem perfectly fine - no squabbling.
The other male I put in with just one hen - they seem to get along really well - I guess I am lucky that all my boys seem laid back.

Rita - I have now moved the banties on and am concentrating on the quails - would like to get some more colours next year.
Currently have the usual native brown (3 boys 1 girl), a couple of dark brown hens and a fawn and an italian coloured Hen (think thats right description, cream with dark brown speckles). I really like the dark brown hens, so hope to get some more of these.

Since last posting, I have had some of the eggs in the incubator as I promised some chicks to the daughter of the guy we got the eggs off originally. Put 35 in had 31 hatch so very impressed. These have just gone on to new homes, and I am expecting another batch this weekend coming (these are for me this time).

Hi Guys, I've just started with quail! I have 7 ATM 5 hens and 2 males!! Just today set 12 CPQ in the incubator!! Hopefully they all hatch I got them from eBay as really want to breed them also!! So I have 3 Japanese quail 2 bobwhites and 2 chocolate quail! They all seem very happy always playing jumping everywhere but I'm not sure why they have not given me no eggs yet?? I have them inside with a uv light on for minimum 14 hours a day direct above them. I feed them a mix of chick crumb and corn feed? I was told this was good for them?? Also the bobwhites I have both have got white heads does this mean 100% that they are Male because the farm I got them from swore they was hens!! He told me there's different breeds and some breeds the males have white heads!! I can't get hold of them to vent sex them!! All they do is stick together and eat and sleep?? I have these in a 250cm rabbit indoor cage at the min I've just brought a 4 metre chicken coope but was told not too be them outside until summer as it will affect the laying if I move them now because will will have to become comfortable again?? Hopefully they start to lay soon as I can't wait to hatch from my hens!! With the eggs I have in the incubator now am I right to not add any water until day 13 with CPQ??? Thanks guys great site by the way!!!
