Hi, hubby and I are planning a small hobby/business selling POL hybrids and breeding pure breed hens and eventually hatching eggs and chicks. Also offering a hen boarding service and selling feed and poultry equipment.

I am doing this as there is a distinct lack of places in my area to buy hens and I have had to board my hens in the most appalling 'holiday home' where they have come home in a right sorry state . I have done a bit of market research but would appreciate it if there are any backyard hen keepers in my area who would be interested in my service.

We are in the Dudley area of the West Midlands. Any feedback would be much appreciated. Thanks, Caz

I am hoping to move to the Solihull area this year if I can sell my current home so will be very interested in restocking when I get there. I have 4 ducks too -are you planning to board them too ?

We had two local businesses in South Staffordshire doing similar but they have now gone. So wish you the best of luck Cazzyp. Sure you will be fine as long as you don't need to make any major profit and just cover your costs. There is also a local shop selling only poultry feedstuffs, nothing else, and they are doing fine. The three local agricultural merchants do poultry equipment but we used to struggle to get the better 'green range' feeders and drinkers, so the basic small to medium sizes may be worth keeping.
 
Do you do hen boarding> I would be very interested as I live a few miles away and I am thinking of going away for a few days next week if I can sort out some local reliable hen boarding. I have 3 chickens 0:-)
 
It strikes me that a business offering to take care of people's birds in their own runs could be pretty popular. It's not always easy to get someone to take good care of your hens when you go on holiday, but I wouldn't want to risk stressing the girls out or having them pick up any bugs at a (what do you call the hen equivalent of a cattery or kennels) hennery? hennel? :-)19

If there were people who, rather than offering a dog walking service or house & animal sitting service, would just come round once or twice a day, feed the hens, give them clean water, collect the eggs (to prevent egg eating) & poo pick the coop (plus treating them if they get under the weather), that'd be a great service. The customer would leave the food etc. somewhere accessible, so they'd still get their usual diet...

Does anyone else think this'd be a good idea?

There are quite a few chicken - sitters out there Ice maiden, generally they are animal sitters that have expanded, seeing an opportunity, I use a fantastic team and really couldn't get away without them! :D
 
i have just started incubating chickens again, some polish bantams, i would be interested if you have any sitters that would look after them if on holiday in the brownhills area of walsall if not i would be interested in doing something like that on a part time basis, phil
