Hi Im very new to the chicken world, getting my first 6 battery rescue girls 3 days ago. Its very exciting and have been planning for them for a few months. However I am a little concerned about one of them. She seems to have some red warm area on her back and around her bottom. She is eating and drinking, and not as lively as the other 5. But obviously I am concerned. Her feathers are poor and she is bald in lots of places.

I know the most obvious thing is mites, but if I put mite powder on sore skin, will it not irritate it more ? Or does this require a visit to the vets ??

Be grateful for anyone else's experience. :?

Hi Dawn and welcome to the forum :)
Your hen will be fine with louse powder-as long as you get the one that can be used on birds/animals- some is just made for coops/houses. She may be fine -some birds have very red skin especially around the vent and back area.-As long as the skin is not broken/bleeding- once her feathers grow in she should be fine- if you do powder her, make sure you do them all and their coop. Good luck and keep us informed how she gets on.

Hi and welcome
So happy you have given some ex batts a loving home, am sure they will give you lots of enjoyment. When I got my ex batts alot of them were red raw on their skin. I put sudocreme on them and it worked miracles.

Hi. We've had ex batts at work for about 15 months and some of them still have red looking skin although they are all healthy. If the skin isn't broken I wouldn't worry. Welcome to the forum.

Thank you for all your replies. Not entirely sure though, if there is a bit of a bulge there at her back end. Have tried to feel for any stuck eggs and cant feel anything. It is still red, but not as red with the Sudodrem. She is not as big, feathered and lively as others, but dont know if thats from her previous existance ?? She is eating, drinking and forraging round. But does spend some time upstairs in the house. (But this may be with cold weather and because she hasnt many feather ). Am I worrying too much.

As long as she is eating / drinking and looks healthy then I would not worry. The bulge under her rear end is probably an egg she is about to lay?
