Hi All

I have just joined this group.

I keep pet ducks in Dorset.

I also teach animal behaviour and welfare at degree level specialising in domestic ducks.

I hope to learn from everyone here and share experiences, this group looks very informative.

I have also started a yahoo Group for UK duck owners where I hope to network with people about behaviour, health rehoming and rehabbing.

You will find quite a few members on here with ducks and geese, so I am sure you will feel at home! :-)99

I keep runner ducks and Muscovies..don't think you could find two more different ducks! :D

Oh you really ought to get yourself some Muscovies...they actually have sense of humour, they are very clever and also interesting particulary as they communicate in an entirely different way to mallard derived ducks :D
 
Hi!

Very interesting job you have! Dream job for any of us on herei bet! How did you get into that sort of work?

I live near an argi college but not alot of specification into ducks up theere just general care etc, did you go to a university to be able to learn about ducks to a degree level??

Really interested in you as i'd like to get into lecturing but don't really know where to start! lol I studied Animal behaviour, but only as part of a BTEC National diploma! So not alot!!

That's interesting. I didn't think there was such a specialisation to be honest.

Animal behaviour usually concerns cats, dogs and occasionally horses with the odd rabbit! Is this a thesis you are doing to specialise in ducks?

It seems waterfowl are forgotten as there is little commercial interest and very few behavioural problems in domestic waterfowl from what I have seen if general / good care is practised ?
 
Thanks for the welcome! My area of interest and research is commercial duck welfare mostly in regard to water related behaviour. In regard to teaching behaviour the course covers a huge range of species focusing on farm animals and companion animals. I don't get to teach much duck stuff! Chicken cognition is commercially of interest also on welfare grounds. I do lottle teaching now having left to pursue commercial research into duck welfare. I find my 'pet' flock gives me a good insight into the intricacies of ducks behaviour especially in regard to water related behaviour.
I look forward to learning more here for everyone! There is always so much to learn!
