Im posting a picture of my neighbours hybrid .Its been looking like this since Sunday. She took it to the vet who didnt know what it was but gave her antibiotic to give by syringe.
It stands like this most of the day and is very thin. When i saw it from a distance it was standing on one leg with one eye shut.

I wondered if any one has seen this before? Mareks do you think? vet suggested worms.....sound to me they havent a clue about chickens!!!!SDC10154.JPG

Hi, well personally i would cull her-or have her put to sleep at the vets- she looks like she is suffering - i would have thought the vet would at least have an idea-and be able to give advice
regards, David :)

I agree with you David. It's probably the kindest thing to do at this stage. We have had 2 Vets deal with our Flock and they don't really have a lot of knowledge when it comes to Poultry. Checked out the Poultry Vets listings on here though and have made a note of the practice here in N.I. for future reference. When we had our first experience with a sick Aracauna and our former Vet it taught us an expensive lesson in Animal Husbandry, we'd taken Her in to see what He could do, we think She had some kind of neurological disease and He suggested culling Her, He charged us £30 to do that. We've since had to cull 3 Birds over the past 3 years and learned to do it ourselves here at home, it's never easy but as has been said it ends their suffering.

Hello,

We bought six fully vaccinated chickens about 18 months ago and within 6 months one suddenly died, we don't know what from. We then bought a further three chickens from a different supplier, when we viewed the birds i noticed that one of the birds eyes was starting to close over but did'nt think anything of it and brought them home. About a week or so later the problem got worse and within three weeks all eight birds were infected. I took the worse one to the vet and the problem was diagnosed as "Infectious Coryza".
This was treated with "Terramycin sol 5%" added in the drinking water. The problem cleared up within a week or so, but you cannot eat the eggs during the treatment period, Please consult your vet for advice.

This worked for me but may be different for you.

Does she walk around like that all the time or does she stretch her neck?

If it's neck stretching, I'd go for Gapeworm in the trachea (wind pipe), treat with flubenvet.

There's a picture of this on the Poultry Diseases and Disorders page under Gapeworm.

If it's permanently like that, I'd go for disease that's effecting the nervous system - goodness knows which one.... if she also has respiritory problems, it could be Infectious Bronchitus - I would then cull her or take her to the vets and have her pts.

I would definately confine her in from the flock though to stop the spread of it...

Most vets will prescribe broad spectrum antibiotics - they kill the harmful bacteria caused by the disease (and the good bacteria unfortunately). This doesn't always cure the bird - afterwards the birds can still be carriers such as with Mycoplasma infection so it's always a good idea not to introduce new stock with these birds if possible.

Hope this helps.

Tim
