Hi everyone,

This is a bit of a sad day for me because I've just lost one of my lovely Gold Laced Orpington Hens.

I'm just wondering if anyone can shed any light on her symptoms.

Yesterday, she became mopey and lethargic and didn't want to come out of the chicken house.
My treatment: I administered some net-tex vitamin & mineral drops. She felt a bit on the light side, but there were no signs of parasites or any other problems. She seemed better after that and was eating and drinking, and spent most of the day outside, but was on the quiet side.

This morning: She wouldn't come out of house again. Her head was bent round to one side and she was making twitching movements. My husband humanely 'put her to sleep'.

She was just over a year old and had just finished her first breeding season along with her sister.
They were free-ranging with plenty of grass and fresh water. They have all been fed layers pellets ad-lib and given a handful of grain between them every day to scratch feed. They have ample space to exercise under the shade of an oak tree. All were wormed with flubenvet early in the spring, and the hen and cockerel she was running with are both young and healthy.

Does anyone recognise these symptoms?

Hi, if she was light- and you checked for lice- did you check your coop for red mite? Sometimes they just die-orps can be prone to heart attacks and without an autopsy you may never know- but losing weight is one sign of redmite- you have wormed them so that rules them out- sorry for being so vague- :( I would check for red mite and if none found and your other birds are healthy them just put it down to nature- it happens.
regards, David :)

Hi Davidd,

Thanks for your reply. Don't think red mite are the culprits this time. The chicken house is brand new - made by my husband. It was creosoted back in February and I check weekly for signs of red mite.
It could well have been something like a stroke that affected my hen - especially being a large breed. My main concern was if it was something contagious (everyones worst nightmare).
I'll just put it down to 'one of those things'
Thanks again.
