I can't believe this. Olive my Pekin who hatched a couple of chicks at the end of March seems broody again even though she is still looking after her chick. She went back into lay but a couple of days ago kept sitting in the nest box. I thought she may be egg bound or something but today I came home from work and on lifting her up found she had laid an egg but was now sitting on it.
Can anyone offer advice as I feel sorry for her chick as she spends her time sitting in the nest box with mum which I feel can't be good for her. I can't put her with the others in the main run as she is still too small.
Please help :?

Just stickin a post on to bring it back to the top of the list, no replies as yet for you CTB, you've either got the guru's stumped or its been missed.
Hope someone sees it now and hope baby bird isn't getting neglected too badly

Hi Claire,

could you remove the nest box or barricade it so she can't get in?Then she would have to stay outside and will hopefully scratch around and behave more normally. The other thing you could do,is to have a separate run,(with adequate shelter) in a fresh part of your garden and pop mum and chick in this with food and water for the day.
If she needs to lay an egg,she will lay it somewhere else.

Thanks for putting a post on Aileen. It was good of you and now Lydia has answered.................. (By the way what happened with your eggs?)
Thanks for your advice Lydia. Since posting this thread I got my thinking head on and decided to do as you have suggested and lock her out of the nest box before I go to work. When I get back I put them out in the garden and it seems to be having some effect, especially today as she hasn't made any effort to go back in.
The chick is thriving and seems to be getting quite independent even walking about the garden without mum. I can see why it is a better idea to hatch at least 6 chicks as then this situation would not have arisen as she would have her little mates to hang out with.
