Thank you so much to all the people who advised me about the chicken run I wanted to build. I am SO bad at DIY but have had a really good go at it. Now, it is nearly done.... and has been much cheeper than buying a pre built one. Although it is not a pretty run like some I have seen for sale, it does use all the space available and just think of the new skills I have gained!!!
For the roof, I am thinking of using chicken wire and covering part of it maybe with corrugated plastic?
Thank you bantiekeeper for letting me see your very delux run! How luxurious for your chickens!! I would love to attach a photo of mine, but my IT skills are not very good!

feel free to pm me and with your email adress and i will happily post your pics for you :D p.s well done on building a run its not easy but great fun to do a little trick i used to build mine very secure i kept thinking wow i could keep monkies in here it works a treat

Hi Clucking chicks. Top of the run needs to do three things. Keep predators out, keep them dry and give them shade from the sun. We use clear plastic scaffolding cladding sheeting which is very heavily reinforced so provides some shade, but it comes in 50 metres long x 3 metres wide rolls at £90. We used to use mesh and cover part with black plastic but found that you can catch your clothing on the mesh if the run isn't high enough. Ours are only 1.1 metres high.

Hi,
I was at a local auction thwe other week and there was a top quality (well known brand aswell) chicken coop, with a spacious run, for £20.00. The next week, went to a well known, chain pet shop and they were selling the exact coop and run for £190.00. Amazing what you can buy at auctions!

Thank you all for the tips.. I will sort the roof out then may have to get some help with posting pics Karminski!

All our run panels and linking panels (temporary fencing) are built using 2" x 1" treated roofing laths from builders merchants or timber merchants in packs of 10 x 3 metres. Need to look at the grain -closer it is the better quality. Usually the best quality laths have the origin and treatment printed onto the sides. We have had runs in contact with the ground for three years now and they are only just beginning to rot and they are made of the poorest quality stuff I bought before realising much better was available.
