At the end of last week one of my hens became lame and could only stand using her wing to balance. She doesnt seem ill in herself - red comb, good feathers. Now my other two hens have the same trouble. Their legs are lumpy and scales raised. I have tried unction and bathed their feet in surgical spirit - but no real sign of improvement. Any suggestions?

Hi, it sounds like Scaley leg to me, caused by mites. You can buy a spray for it, though apparently liquid parafin and vaseline is also good.
By the way. welcome to the forum, its a great place to get help and advice (I have learned so much from this myself as I am only a learner  )

it does sound like they have scaly leg mite, but i have never known for it to make them lame. you can cure it with a spray or cover their legs in vaseline to 'suffocate' the mites. but the scales will then have to naturally fall off over time before they will have nice clean smooth legs again. may take a number of months.
