Well we moved to Turkey for some new experiences and got our wish today at around 12.30 when we felt the shocks from an earthquake measured at 6.9 by the USGS. Quite disconcerting to be wobbling from side to side on the 8th floor of a 13 storey building, it makes you quite queasy, of course you don't know at that time whether it is going to get worse or stop, there was then a 5.3 aftershock 9 minutes later apparently that we hardly felt.

That's seriously scary Dinosaw. And you were on the 8th floor as well !!! Closest I've been to anything like that was the solid floor moving in our UK house due to a difference in air pressure between the second and third storey. It happened with strong wind around the building which I think had some effect of sucking the air out of the lower storey through the chimney whilst pressurising the upper storey from draught through the sash windows. The floor was lime mortar over straw on beams, so it had some inherent flexibility that wasn't evident when you walked over it. First time it happened I thought earthquake.

Crikey that must be an old building, I've heard of lime plaster over straw bales for walls but it sounds a bit optimistic for flooring. You would have to hope it wasn't a windy day when people came round to view your house then. The shaking here lasted for about 20 seconds, afterwards we were more worried about whether there may be a possibility of a tsunami as we would be well and truly knackered here if there was, after watching a documentary about the Japanese tsunami (which admittedly was after a 9 magnitude quake) Mrs Dinosaw has always said that if we ever see the sea go out suddenly we get in the car and head for the hills ASAP as it is a sure sign of what is to follow.

1830 Dinosaw. they laid the straw over the beams and threw progressive layers of lime mortar over it until 3" thick.

I've seen the same tsunami video and I'd do the same thing (might grab a few fish first). The people who dashed to the hotel were flooded two floors up!

Looks like we were lucky. Another earthquake in the region and twenty buildings have collapsed in Izmir this time, they also had a mini tsunami.

This second one certainly brings back memories.

Oops, sorry. I've been back in the UK for ages now, I forgot there are loads of people who have joined the forum since I was last out there. Meant to say lucky we didn't have one that bad and lucky we are back here now.

I saw today's date on it and just assumed! Wrongly, of course.

Quite reasonably, my fault entirely. Should have just started a new thread and explained myself properly, sometimes too deep in my own head for my own good.

That's ok we have all caught up now.
We had some friends who many years ago got caught up in horrendous fires in Australia, and were flown over to California and were immediately subjected to an earthquake, we were all looking forward to their next trip. They went to Wales and the only restaurant in the area burn't down the day before they got there.
They said the first thing they noticed about the earthquake was the hangars in the wardrobe moving along the pole, then the curtains hanging into the room, then the shaking started, she said it was like a rocking boat and felt sick

Nevertheless a frightening wake up call on what could have been. Do you have any friends in the afflicted zone?

Not really any more, the person we were closest to moved to Azerbaijan of all places, seems to spend all his time skiing. The few acquaintances we know of who are still there seem to be ok though.

Bet they were feeling like right Jonah's, you wouldn't want them boarding your ship.

Don't suppose your friends were planning to go narrowboating in the UK next week?

I don't think so, but we often joked about their photo album, "oh here we are on the Titanic, that's us on the plane with Man Utd at Munich"

He was a petrol tanker driver and got suspended for driving and smoking, he was most peeved as" I have been doing it for years no problem"

So it was just holidays that were jinxed, and weddings, their daughters wedding, the vicar collapsed with appendicitis en route to church, so no vicar, and it was pre mobile phone days

Contrariwise most of us can think of times when we escaped by the skin of our teeth. Though not by nature a theist I have pondered sometimes whether we each have allotted tasks and will be spared until we have completed those tasks.
But enough about religion. Now those taxes ....................!
