hi! I am gerber, I live in Newbury park, California and I just added a 18 month old( says her prior owner so I have no idea how accurate that is) red star hen to my rather long list of rescued animals who were headed for some bad end!
all I know is what the craigslist ad said, here it is verbatim,
" Laying hen red star (Moorpark)
She is 18 months old and she needs to be the ONLY CHICKEN in her cage. She killed another chicken once but she has never pecked me. Maybe she would be a good free range chicken. She lays large brown eggs. Sometimes she eats them so if you collect the egg shortly after she lays it, you can have it for yourself.
If interested please let me know when you can pick her up.
P.s. her name is Tim.
she doesn't lok like any of the red stars I have now looked up online, I think it is molting. I got her yesterday, and put her in a HUGE enclosure with my two old large tortoises who are about to go into hibernation( boxes, garage) for six months. got her a LARGE dog crate, filled it with pine shavings, put her in it at dusk last night.
I stayed with her and the torts all afternoon yesterday as I wanted to make sure her 'chicken aggression' didn't extend to my 75 year old tortoises, who are VERY fearless and VERY curious about ANYTHING that moves, but she seemed fine.
I don't know what else to do right now, all I know is I saved her from being given away as a meat chicken for at least a day, and she now has a fenced in area that's the size of my whole side house, and seems happy. how does all this sound? Is a murderous chicken rare? I didt ask details, and they didn't offer but she does seem to like people and is curious, and funny to watch and listen to and very attentive to me and my children so far.
Thanks for reading.
