Hello
I thought I would share the pictures of the chickens which I got from Preloved last week.
The person who I got them off said one with the white on is an Amber Star and the other one a Welsummer? I don't know too much about the breeds so if you know, please let me know and that would be great thankyou.
Excitement we have had them just over a week and had our first egg this morning and it was huge! The noise coming from both of the chickens was phenominal!

The top one could well be an Amber Star. The mixture of white and brown in their plumage differs from bird to bird. Since the main criterion for these commercial hybrids is how well they lay, there's no need for farmers to worry about standardising the plumage! Yours should lay well, though I have one who laid normally from 6-10 months old but hasn't actually produced an egg for nearly a year now, which is odd as she is now still not two years old.
I don't know about the Welsummer, I've never kept them.

Have you got a side shot of the "Welsummer" DJH? I'm no expert but my hens were judged "breeding quality" so I can compare with them. The hackles on the neck look right but she should have a very flat back and tipped up tail so she's virtuall "U" shaped when seen from the side. My friend had a Wernlas Olive and we always had to look twice if we saw her away from the Welsummers - seen next to one of them it was easy to tell them apart.

Hi thank you all - It is certainly a learning curve having chickens! Today we went out for a couple of hours and came back to Bernie having been pecked! I checked my book and it suggested boredom! So I let them out from the coop, even though the garden isn't totally fenced I thought I'd take the risk, and they have had a ball :) So pleased we did as they have been great and even went back in the coop ready for bedtime. Here is the side shot of the welsummer but took with my phone so not great. Thank you again for your help. Debbie.

Any idea how old she is Debbie? My girls' tails are taller/longer but that could be age or having been fortunate in getting breeding quality birds quite by accident. Other than the lenght of her tail, I would say she is doing a good impression of a Welsummer.

Thank you Margaid. The lady who I got them from said 1.5 - 2yrs. The red things under beak I have been told can be a sign of age too, I don't know if that is correct? Really pleased as we are getting an egg from each of them now, so relieved they are not too past it!
