Thought I would share with you some of the Moths we got in the Moth trap, so far we have had over 70 species, quite a few are awaiting ID as the tiny ones are very tricky and so alike

I think some moths are more beautiful than butterflies. I love the emerald one. The firstpic looks like a cornetto :lol:

Have to admit though that for some reason, moths completely freak me out!

Moths used to freak me out too Lady A - I think it's the way they flutter around in lampshades and then zoom out, seemingly straight at you. Since I discovered there a day flying moths as well, which are beautiful, I've become less panicky at night.

Saw a Tiger Moth on my runner beans a couple of days ago, and an Elephant Hawkmoth on the conservatory windowsill.

Well bym, to my knowledge I’ve never seen any of them but more worrying to me is the fact that I’ve never even heard of any of them.
The study of moths is going to have to go in my ignorance bucket along with car mechanics and classical music.

How big, or small, are those species?

Also I’ve just read that Germany is plagued this summer by the caterpillars of Oak Processionary Moths, the hairs of which cause blistering, dizziness and athsma in humans. The hairs are blown in the wind and six people have already had operations to remove hairs from their corneas.

The Buff Tip which is cunningly disguised to look like a broken branch is 50mm, the Light Emerald 40mm, the Festoon Moth 20mm, so tiny.
nasty little things the Oak processionary moth caterpillar, for us humans but Cuckoo's love them they can eat them as they shed their stomach lining everyday and avoid the irritant that way.

Caught a Box Tree moth last night an invader from India, it just loves to eat Box tree hedging and privet.

It's the fluttering that does me too! That, and at night, I get big moths on the outside of the windows, and they have these horrible red glowing eyes!! At least, that's how it looks. I'm sure it's just the light reflecting on them. I hope!
