OK any horsey peeps out there? Just had the most amazing evening last night with the orignal "horse whisperer", watched him break a horse from scratch with kindness, incredible! A real advocate of kindness and philosophy of non-violence with horses. He is now 76 and fit as a fiddle.
A truly wonderful experience! :-)08 :-)08

I'm envious, never seen Monty in action in real life but have seen Richard Maxwell, Michael Peace and Kelly thingy? all truly awesome!

Yep! I've used join up and Kelly Marks' books for donkeys! Before I moved here from the US I was head girl at a breeding facility :) But I have to say I'm more of a Parelli girl as the carrot sticks were pretty much how we did a lot of things already before natural horsemanship came about for our high level dressage movement training.

You should check out the real 'originals' Pat Parelli, his wife and John Lyons. I've used natural horsemanship since I was a teenager. I used to train horses for a living back in the US. :)

i hate the term 'break' for backing and bringing up horses. especially when said in association with natural horsemanship, as its far from 'breaking' a horse. it's getting to know a horse and building a relationship with them. not breaking them to submission and fear.

I like all aspects of horses and horsemanship but i lurve classical

Gives me goosebumps, enjoy.

See what you mean ccm, beautiful! I remember seeing the famous Lippizaners in Vienna years ago, absolutely wonderful.

omg i love the Lipizzaner horses!! my favorite horses are Andalusian's (Lusitanos in particular). I've been watching this show recently called Heartland from Canada and the girl in the series this season is doing more natural horsemanship and join up work. very moving! makes me cry! Watch this episode... http://youtu.be/CKlLUVgLLpQ

I like Claus Hempfling - saw one of his live demos - brilliant very calm and quiet with the horses, treated each as and individual and when the horse had got one little thing - even if it was only after 5mins, he finished on a good note and left it at that. I love classical dressage, the lippizaners are beautiful, andalusians are one of my fav breeds, I was lucky enough to get to ride a highly trained dressage andi stallion - I died and went to heaven!!:D
Can't stand Monty Roberts at all he really is a circus clown that puts on a fancy show and has money as the driving force not the horses at all!! He did a demo a while back and ran a 2yr old colt into the ground for 3hrs - a 2yr old should be out in the field playing and should not even be lunging let alone have someone on board, he ran the poor baby to exhaustion, as he did not want to look like he failed in front of an audience, then stuck a saddle on it and tah dah!!!:( - most of his 'shows' are like that!
I hate to think of the long term affects the join up rubbish has on horses, they never mention if you try it on a dominant horse you're going to get killed!!! And don't even get me started on parelli - it's no better than a circus show, if you see the vids on the net on how his wife treats horses away from the camera you'd be horrified!!!! - they even had a horse load onto a moving trailer - wtf!!!! I went to 2 parelli demos, as I like to keep an open mind, and walked out on both I was that disgusted, I've bred horses for years and dealt with alot of youngsters/stallions etc and all it takes is calm common sense, time and patience, not whacking a horse in the face with a rope/carrot stick etc - which is just a regular stick with a huge price tag btw - to make it back up and all the other drivel they come up with to sell products/videos etc!! - sorry for the rant but they really do make me angry, I will give them one thing though they do have one hell of a marketing team that has put alot of notes in their bank, it targets people who have the rose tinted romantic illusion of being 'one' with their horse but don't actually know diddly sqaut about them so want a quick fix - that rope 'be nice halter' is about as kind as using barbed wire, I've seen a horse loose half it's face down to the bone to one of those cheese string contraptions, I've seen so many good horses end up at the knackers because people tried to 'train' horses this way I will be glad when the fad for these idiots is over!!!!!:(

as with all animals all it takes is pure trust and common sense , i almost had my horse go to richard maxwell many years ago but he cancelled her the day before we was due to go since then i lost trust with people like that although i still admire them in the end i done her myself only took 30 mins and she never loked back all i done was saddle her up got on and rode it was so brillant quick and calm that i was shocked , but with ben who i have now it took me 6 years to pluck up the courage to get on him{ some say i was feeling guilty for losing my mare and i lost all confidence } this year i finally done it thing is with ben you knock his trust and you can forget everything until hes ready to come back to you its a long long story with him but he was mistreated badly before i got him and that was in the first 5 months of his life but once i got him things changed for the better :D .i did have probs at first with him so someone mentioned a horse whisperer to me so i called him and he came out and 6 hrs later my horse was caught ,halter, wormed ,feet trimmed i was shocked that i could not speak and the guy never used a rope nor halter he just used his body lanuage the police used him to catch up differcult traveller horses that had to be taken and he would send them to a secret location retrain them and then rehome them sadly though he died or esle i would of got him to help me with ben when he was a 4 yr old .
