I am new to keeping chickens, Easter this year. Had four lovely orpingtons and later two light sussex. All was OK for several weeks then problems galore. Broody, mycroplasma - Baytrill and no eggs for six weeks, broody again, snotty noses, sour crop, chicken died then a sick gold lace orp. Ready to give up now, but was determined not to lose this full of character and most wonderful chicken. Symptoms -she suddenly decided to sleep most of the time, even mid walk!! dull feathers, no energy, stopped eating laying and socialising. Weight loss - almost all of it! She was obviously dying - not another one!
After discussion with expert friends she was separeted, powdered and wormed (worms came out wholesale and mites died, although she had been treated for the said blighters) then syringe fed every 2 hours for
a day, with canned sweetcorn and glocose, then three times a day with moistened chick crumb and glucose for 7 days! She still wouldn't peck and stayed like this for several days! Will she ever get better?
On daughter-in-laws expert advice she was given vits and minerals, grapeseed, vit k, codliver oil and yogurt straight down. The next day Mount Vesuvius came out like a bullet from a gun! The biggest and most disgusting poop the world has ever seen! We decided not to feed her anymore and went back to basics and taught her to peck again, because she wouldn't by now.
Two weeks down the line she is the top of the pecking order (bottom brfore) aNd laying beautiful brown eggs! She is as naughty as ever but most importantly is truly a miracle chicken.
What have I learnt? Never give up on these entertaining and comical friends.
