Just wanted to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year - I wont be able to log in much over the next few days - will be mostly peeling sprouts, eating turkey and over - exciting children :-)07
Have a good break everyone! :D

Yes, likewise, happy Christmas.

I can just hear the children stiring upstairs now... and Santa has been, drank his wine and eaten his mince pie and left lots of presents!

Must go now!!

i didnt get much but wasnt expecting anything anyway as i could not afford to get pressies this year for my family as i had vet bills etc to get paid so i did the smart thing and got myself debt free for the new year instead :D :D smart move  but i will get mum an dad something come the spring when we cam start to go to longaches garden centres hehehee i love it there , mum did get me the complete box set of laurel and hardy films eveything they had ever made :D theres something like 21 dvds .

Well I got 'The Poultry Keepers Text Book' from 1939, a book on Geese, a plate with a pair of Brecon Buff Geese painted on it and a fleece.

I didn't do too badly at all! :D

Well done Karlooben for getting debt free, that's well worth doing - especially in the current climate. :-)08

i could of left the vet bills etc tell the new year but i promised myself that i was going to start a fresh and i will be i just dont have much money left to last me from 2 weeks wages  i must be the only perosn whos done it all back to front :-)17

bet your book is interesting has much changed ?? since 1939

Yes, the book is really interesting - the diseases section makes interesting reading and some of the recommendations of what to do - we'd never do now. :-)07

There are the 'latest' theories on genetics, some of which I think are still spot on!

Standards certainly move on - it's interesting as there are 150 illustrations and the (black and white) photos show such a difference to present day birds. Orpingtons were tight feathered for example and not the big fluffy birds of today. Light Sussex were very much utility birds and there are pictures of them in laying trials as well as a prize winning cock that has an almost flat / horizontal back, very much a different type to today.

It's amazing how much work has gone into the book. I haven't read it yet though. :-)02

i mite treat myself to it in the new year along with everything esle i want

I keep a look out on ebay for these sorts of book but Veronica Mayhew also sells antique poultry books and so on. She is really really great - so genuine it's untrue. A lovely lady.

Antique Poultry Books - Veronica Mayhew

In her catalogue she says it's worth £14 but I think I paid about £8 on ebay (you do have to wait though)

Hi,

Glad everyones expectations were met.

We too had to rain in expenses this year, (I am still not working- The new NHS job lasted a week due to a misundertstanding with the agency and their interpretation of the "required skill set"- which I clearly didn't have)

Anyway, I filled a basket for my sister and mother-in-law to be with home made goodies- Lemon Curd, Ganache Truffle Chocolates and Snowflake Shortbread Biscuits-All made with our girls eggs. Apparently the chocs were comparable to Thorntons no less!!!! I also added a couple of boxes of our girlies eggs complete with posh labels in nicely coloured boxes from Flytes so fancy.

Everyone was well chuffed.... I spend the entire summer season buying up any interesting baskets from car boots for such things.

Have never baked before having the hens, (Last Feb) and was inspired by the summer series of The Great British Bake Off.

Have received the accompanying book for xmas along with a very shiny food processor- no stopping me now......

I also gained so much satisfaction from making everything.....

Hope everyone had a great Christmas Day. I gave the girls a pasta and rice treat with sweetcorn and peas, then cleaned out the henhouses
