Maggots!

My hubby is a fisherman & when he returns from a days fishing we feed the girls the leftover maggots. They go absolutely mad for them, pecking order forgotten & they all tuck in as fast as they can. Just wondered if anyone else has tried this as a tasty treat? Must be good for them in respect of protein! I have also been known to go to our local tackle shop to buy some just for the girls much to the amusement of the shop owner ;)
 
you do have to be careful as maggots are fed on rotting meat so dont over do it
Mealworms are better,but he dont use them for fishing does he ?????????
 
They are reputed to be an excellent
way of getting bunged up crops on the move again!
 
We were using dried meal worms as a treat and still do inbetween maggoty treats! Yes the maggots are used for fishing :? Another maggot tip, we used them to get our new baby chickens used to us. Initially they were terrified of us big people but thanks to a couple of maggots they now eat out of our hands including jumping up on to my 6 year olds tummy to get at the maggots in his hand!

Well I now know what school can do with the maggots after they have done a long day of maggot racing :) My girls will have a great day.

Maybe I should suggest it for our forth coming village fete ;)

Hi there - my first post !!

I don't think the above statement is strictly correct! Commercial prepared maggots (i e those sold in fishing tackle shops) by law, have to be fed on meat that is fit for human consumption. The farms including those in Ireland are strictly regulated. I believe that this has been the case for 20 years or more and (strangely) was an early regulation introduced by the EU. DIY raised maggots can be bred on whatever you can manage to persuade the blowfly female to lay her eggs on? There are many recipes available on the internet .

Just trying to get started in chicken keeping so I will be back with more questions of my own
