Just had a funny episode in the run this afternoon. They had been out in the garden (next doors garden actually while I was digging out the last bit of foundations.) I was about to pour concrete so called them all back in with some mealworms. A couple of minutes after closing the door there was a lot of running around and clucking and Lulu had caught a mouse. Managed to catch her and remove it (was half way down already) and left the run again with mangled mouse corpse. But then Lulu started attacking Linden - who fought back indignantly. She then stood by the wire glaring daggers at me for a couple of minuets before going and pecking violently at the cabbage. What a strop!
I'm glad chickens are quite small!

That reminded me of a time when the girls were out in the garden and we suddenly realised it had gone very quiet, there they were all huddled in a corner eating a mouse, which someone had caught. As most of it had disappeared down various throats we left them to it. One did look at us with a "don't even think about trying to get it" sort of look.
As you say good job they are small

I don't blame Lulu for looking daggers at you. I would certainly have something to say if you stole my dinner from me. ;)

Oh wow! I had no idea they could/ would catch mice!
One of mine had caught a frog and was having a great time with it... It was too gross by the time I discovered it for me to feel able to do something about it... But mice, wow!

Mice, voles, slowworms....you name it! Pity they didn't have more of a taste for slugs, now that would have been useful in the veg patch!

Ours avoid slugs as well, presumably because they are so slimy. They leave the toads alone as well, they may have experienced the nasty stuff coming out of their warts, or instinctively know to avoid them. They did get a juvenile Robin once as well which I wasn't too happy about, but as it had a habit of just sitting around, it would have probably been got by something or the other before long
