Joanna, my lovely speckled sussex bantam who had a badly broken leg two years ago has died. She had a course of antibiotics for a chest infection in the cold weather, then had sourcrop. I thought I was winning with probiotics but she had some fluid in her crop so I starved her yesterday and found her unexpectedly dead this morning. One of my sweetest, most friendly and beautiful birds.

I had thought the broken leg was due to a cockerel mating with her, but now think its more likely someone trod on her.

You did your best for her Chickenfan. Having a broken leg must be stressful and that cant help with general resistance to other things that come along. Its so easy to step on them when they are all around cambering for whatever they think you’ve got. I’ve had a narrow escape a couple of times including one evening not long after first getting the hybrids when they had all gathered in a huddle just outside under the back door step in the dark.
