Loss of balance

She wasn't moulting then, just eating fallen pears. She was normal next day and we picked up all the pears we could before she was let out of the run. She never showed those symptoms again and carried on laying every day as usual until her moult started a few weeks later. None of the others have ever behaved like that. I still think she was drunk and have entered that in her records. See what happens next year.
 
My wyandotte who appeared to be 'drunk' and staggering sideways has now made a full recovery. The problem was that she had been broody for MONTHS and therefore not eating properly, despite me throwing her out of the house every day! She then decided to lose all her 'clothes' at once and obviously didn't have enough energy stored up to deal with growing new feathers and so all the protein etc. was going into feather production and not enough to her brain! I know that I will probably get negative comments from some members, but I thought it might help other novices if I shared the way I dealt with it. She was fed as many greens as she could eat, usually chopped spinach, a warm mash made up of poultry mash with various things added including grated cheese, sweetcorn, sultanas and mealworms. I also hand fed her minced beef mixed with poultry spice three times a day. She went to bed with a full crop. I also put Nettex Total Moulting Solutions in her water. It was last Sunday she first showed the signs of losing her balance and by Tuesday this started to get better with a slight improvement every day. Yesterday she was fully recovered and her feathers are growing back very quickly. She'll probably go broody again any minute now as there is always a drama of some sort with her!!!
 
That's Wyandottes for you Sue. Never a dull moment with ours. And were off to Stoneleigh tomorrow to see more. I agree with you about protein and the brain -we have a few that are not as sharp as usual -the ones in the heaviest moult.

I have to say, for all the problems she's caused, mine certainly has a BIG personality and I would miss her is she wasn't around! But she certainly takes up a lot of time!
 
No I'm not Sue. But I saw a trio of Transyvanian Naked Necks at £60 .........and they were sold!!!! Can't see them standing Winter without heat, but they shouldn't suffer much in a moult -they haven't got that many feathers anyway.
 
Isn't that cheap for naked necks? I thought they were a breed that was quite expensive to buy. Don't like them myself though.
 
Very cheap, that's why they were sold by 10.15am I suppose. Someone has possibly bought them to sell on. A lot of that goes on amongst poultry 'breeders'. They may re-appear on Sunday with £120 price tag. Alternatively, come Spring, you will see hatching eggs on ebay. Poor things; dread to think what conditions they may be kept in when just kept for profit.
 
Yes Sue. Spent too much. Bought two large Grandpa's Feeders and some clip-on drinkers. Won a bottle of Nettex drinker sanitiser on Tombola though. Rosie bought a new butter dish with chickens on it. Didn't get any birds. Deliberately took no cash, then Rosie said she had some -but the Naked Necks had gone.
 
Unfortunately we don't have any big shows down this way, but probably just as well as I would be spending far too much money as well!!

Oh Chris you do make me laugh!!! Maybe the buyer just bought them for themselves??? :D :D
I bought a lovely new incubator, and saw the most gorgeous pair of lavender muscoves that I wanted wish I 'd bought now, keep thinking about them :( ..never mind there is always the Federation!! :D

That's all right Foxy. Sorry to be so gloomy -must be the weather. Hope they went to a good home, but I must add during my search for another Boris I uncovered a pair of very dodgy Poultry 'dealers' in a local village -enough said.

I am sorry, I do hope you find another young leghorn banty, Boris sounded like such a character! I can ask around if you like? I do know a good leghorn man :D
 
Thanks for your offer Foxy, but the new Boris is in the greenhouse with his girls having arrived 2 months ago. Snowdrop (top hen and very feisty, beat up the last Boris) has fallen for him and they always sleep together. It couldn't have worked out better.
