Well, got a reply from my MP:
"Dear Donna, Thank you for your letter about Gentoo's refusal to allow you to keep chickens in your back garden. As an MP I am unable to give you legal advice or make legal respresentation on your behalf. However, it seems from what you have said that Gentoo have been inconsistent in their reasoning for their refusal, and so have written to Ian Porter, the Chief Executive of Gentoo Sunderland to pass on your concerns and ask him to explain the decision that was made. I enclose a copy of the letter for your reference. I do hope this matter can be resolved satisfactorily, particularly considering your clear passion for this topic.
If I can be of any further assistance on this or any other issue please do not to hestitate to get in touch.
Your Sincerely,
Sharon Hodgson MP"

and her letter to the Chief Exec of Gentoo:
"Dear Ian, I have recently been contacted by a constituent of mine, Mrs Donna Dunn, regarding her correspondence with Gentoo over keeping chickens in her back garden. I understand that there may well have been, in theory, legitimate reasons for the request to be denied. However, I note that after a challenge to the initial reason that it stated that the property conveyance that poultry was not permitted, the next reponse received suggester that in Gentoo's view the chickens would be a nuisance to neighbours. This would suggest to me that the grounds for the denial of the request lie more in Gentoo's preference rather than a firm contractual or legal basis. This seems particularly strange in the light of Mrs Dunn's claim that her neighbours would be happy for her to keep chickens, and that hens unlike cockerels make very little noise.
I would be interested if you could confirm the reasons for your refusal of the request to Mrs Dunn, and explain the grounds on which you made this decision in the light of the Allotments Act 1950. I look forward to hearing your response.
Your Sincerely,
Sharon Hodgson MP"

I have to say I am quite impressed by the response time to my letter, and hope that by getting my MPs backing it might give Gentoo a shake up that I won't back down quite so easily!
By the way, the reason I had to type all that is cos I couldn't figure how to just attach a copy of the letters to this post.
