Hello all

One of my Welsummers is limping quite badly. She's still eating and drinking and appears quite alert, but at times she'll stand on one leg with her head and tail down.
Today I noticed she was crouched down with one of her wings out. At first I thought she was dust bathing but the limp is becoming worse. I've picked her up and checked her over. No obvious sign of any injury or swelling on her foot or leg. I wondered of it was a case of bumblefoot starting but I can't see anything.

Any ideas anyone?

I think it's more likely an injury but not 100% sure. I'm planning to take her to the vet on Monday. How much am I likely to pay? I've never been to a vet with a hen before.

One of my pekins recently had bumble foot-that was quite easy to spot as soon as she limped . Injury may or may not be obvious , hens also get all those horrid neurological things that make them limp. Best to get her checked by vet , mine charges about £13 per visit for chickens , not a specialist chicken vet BUT despite what many think what applies in the way of other animals /bugs /antibiotics is the same in all creatures! Obviously there are however a few poultry specific diseases but there are also mammal equivalents which your vet will know about.------No ,he doesnt charge that amount for other animals before you all rush down to Sussex!!!!! Hope shes ok ,let us know, Ros

my poultry specialist vet charges £30 per visit but they are happy to give free info over the phone instead of a visit, at that price i only go if really really necessary

you do pay quite a lot girlracer. When I took Kas he had a full examination and p.t.s.,the total cost was £26 at the poultry specialist vet that I use.Obviously,if he'd recieved treatment that would have been more.I wasn't to displeased as it was my first visit to this vet's,and,in the past they have also given me free advice over the phone.
Good luck with Limpy on monday Osric.

Hi Osric,

Sorry to hear about your limping chook.

If there is no obvious visual reason why she's limping and you're out of ideas, a vets opinion is wise. Many vets will give advice over the phone, but in the cases where medication is needed, they will probably need to examine her before dispensing any drugs. Vets consultation charges vary enormously, so it's worth checking out consultation charges b4 you visit to avoid any shocks. Most vets will charge for any medication in addition to consultation.

I always think it worthwhile to get a professional opinion - it's giving your bird a fair chance, peace of mind for you, and will teach you to recognise the problem if it happens again.

Good luck for tomorrow, and I hope she's better soon.

I couldn't catch her, she sat behind the willow tree out of reach so had to cancel the 1st appt.
Then I double booked myself so had to cancel 2nd appt and now she's getting better on her own.

Judging by the fact that I can't catch her suggests shes doing okay!

Osric

LOL,would have loved to see you trying to catch her.......maybe time to go on a diet  .

Glad shes better------------------ love the thought of you not being able to catch the limping hen!!    Ros

Roadrunner versus Osric.......make a change from Wile Coyote  .

I'll you know that I can shift for a fat bloke! 8-)

She didn't run away, just stood behind the willow tree where nobody can reach. I think she knew, becasue I cancelled the vets appt and she was wandering about today!

I was told by the cute vet receptionist girly that I was horrible for naming the hen 'Chicken No Mates'. I said they were named after their characters. This one is bottom of the pecking order hence the name appropriate name. I hope the Ninja or Rambant doesn't need to go to the vet! :)

Speaking of Steve Austin...

When I lived with my sister, I used to argue with her about the theme tune of the Six Million Dollar Man and Emmerdale being the same - not all the way through and a slightly different tempo but the main bit is the same.
Anyone else noticed that?

Osric

I haven't heard the theme tune to A six million dollar man for so long I can't remember,if you can you must be really old  .
Do you remember the intro....Steve Austin,a man barely alive.........

It went something like 'We have the technology to rebuild him... blah blah blah something'

Limping Chicken no mates saw the vet today and got some antibiotics. He said I should keep her separate from the others until she's finished her course and hopefully she should be okay after completing the course of medication.
She looks fairly miserable being kept away from the rest of the gang. The other welsummers all came to see her and stayed close by her this afternoon and made me feel even more guilty for keeping her boxed in round the back of the garage. :(

I hope she recovers soon

Osric

Osric, I'm sure the anti-bio's will do the trick. Its amazing how quickly they perk up once on the right treatment. Hopefully this will do it..
Its horrible when one is poorly, I always feel so helpless. Fingers crossed.

At least the others came to visit, she'll soon recoever and be back with them.
