Hi all,
1 of my 4 hens that i got back in February layed it's first very small egg the other day followed by a normal sized one the next day but since then there have been no more(4 days now).
Is this normal?
Cheers,
Terry.

Hi Terry

I'm sure someone with experience will be along soon to respond but in the meantime.... I bought four hens in March. One is laying reliably, one is laying sporadically and always very small eggs. She laid one last weekend, two the weekend before and nothing else. The other two are still to get off the blocks. From what I've read, I think it's pretty normal for young hens to have no real pattern to their laying behaviour for a while. They should settle into a routine in time assuming that they are healthy and happy.

Hope you enjoyed the eggs.

Helen

I've got full sized buff orps and some of them are laying pekin sized eggs.
I've given up trying to figure hens out and just appreciate the fact that they lay eggs, whatever the odd size and shape.

I'd say all hens (even of the same breed/hybrid)are different. Some start and lay daily, others(the majority probably)are sporadic. As long as your hen is fine and happy, don't worry.
Helen is spot on ;) .

Hi, Terry,

2 of my Pekins were hatched from the same clutch in October last year, and I bought them in February. One of them, Buffy, has been laying for about 3 weeks, roughly every other day. The other, Lemony, my wonderful polystyrene miner, is a red as Buffy, but as yet hasn't produced anything (probably bunged up with the polystyrene!)

The other two were hatched in June and I got them on Good Friday. They lay bigger eggs, but their laying has been disrupted with the change in environment etc.

Yours will settle down, once they get going.

Enjoy.
