One of my girls lays a good egg early morning and sometimes drops another one with soft shell in the afternoon. Today she not only laid a good egg this morning but then she dropped a soft shelled one in the afternoon followed by another one with no shell at all. Is this something to worry about

Wierd. Normally it takes a hen 25 hours to produce an egg... What breed is your turbo egg layer? Silly question, but is it possible that the softies are being laid by another hen?

I only have five of the girls. We were sat watching them this afternoon when the eggs were dropped, so we know which one it is. They are all hybrids and I think she is a Blue Bell

Hi Sonlyme, and welcome to the Forum.
How old is your chicken? Is she just coming into her first lay? They can sometimes do some pretty strange things when going through 'pullet puberty,' so if she's just starting to lay, maybe this is what's happening. Obviously her hormones are working overtime at the moment and the egg cells are coming down the tubes too fast and frequently for her to be able to coat them with shells. At the other end of their productive life, strange egglaying can also happen, as they hit the 'henopause' , so it would be interesting to know her age.

I thought she might be about that age. What breed is she? Hybrids usually come into lay at around 5-6 months, but purebreds are usually a bit later. Any developments today?

She is a blue bell Hybrid and seems as healthy as all the others (I only have five).. It is really good being on the forum and getting help, thankyou

We haven't been able to be much help, I'm afraid, but I hope it's good to know you're not alone!
So long as she appears happy and healthy, there's probably not anything to worry about, you'll just have to keep an eye on her, look out for any more strange happenings, and hope she gets through this tiresome period and starts to lay more normally.

Thanks Marigold, she seems to have been OK the last couple of days. Its good to know where I can ask for help

I also have a blue belle that does much the same thing. She is coming up on 30 weeks, and started laying quite early. She often lays double yolkers. Sometimes soft shelled ones, and sometimes two in a day - at least one of them soft shelled.
I guess that if a chicken can lay a double yolker then it is not much different to actually lay two seperate eggs...

Thanks for the info Nick, I guess I worry too much about them. I look for red mite every day (silly I know) but I would hate them to have anything wrong, they give me endless pleasure
